HI GROUP MEMEBERS, WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, WAHEGUEU JI KI FATEH!! I'M GOING TO DRAW ATTENTION OF ALL OF YOU TOWARDS AN ISSUE WHICH IS CRITICAL AND NEVER TALKED ABOUT OFTEN AND IT IS ABOUT GAYS AND LESBIANS! ALL OF US ARE AWARE THAT THERE ARE SIKHS IN THE WORLD WHO ARE GAYS AND LESBIANS. AND THE WHOLE SIKH DIASPORA AND EVERYONE ELSE CRITICIZE THEM FOR BEING HOMOSEXUAL. HERE MY QUESTION IS THAT ARE THEY REALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR BEING HOMOSEXUAL? I DON'T KNOW WHAT WOULD BE YOUR ANSWER TO IT. BUT I BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE NOT. INSTEAD OF BEING CRITICIZED THEY NEED TO BE LOVE AND AFFECTION. MY FRIEND IS A GAY. HE IS ALSO A SAABAT SOORAT SIKH. HE WAS WORRYING THAT HE CAN'T BE A SIKH AND A GAY AT THE SAME TIME. HE COULD BE EITHER OF THE TWO. HE DON'T WANT IN ANY WAY TO STOP PRACTICING SIKHISM AND AT THE SAME TIME HE HAS NO CONTROL OVER HIS GAY EMOTIONS. SO WHATS THE ALTERNATE WAY FOR HIM? SUICIDE? THAT WAS NOT AN ANSWER BUT THE DECISION HE CAME UP WITH. I TRYING MY BEST TO HELP HIM OUT BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT I CAN DO? BECAUSE OUR RELIGION AND ITS PRINCIPLES ARE QUITE STRICT AND THEN THERE'S A SOCIETY WHICH IS NEVER EVER GOING TO ACCEPT SUCH PEOPLE. I DON'T KNOW WHETHER THIS MESSAGE WOULD BE DISPLAYED ON MESSAGE BOARD OR NOT. BUT IF YOU READ IT DO REPLY WITH WHATEVER YOU THINK. I'LL BE GLAD TO ACCEPT ALL YOUR REPLIES. LOOKING FORWARD FOR YOUR ANSWERS. REGARDS, S. SINGH

First of all I would like to clear that the issue of being homo is really talked about a lot...atleast on this site we're tryin to do so
It's not just about Sikhs, but most Asian cultures, all middle eastern and most Latin cultures don't really welcome homosexuality. So its not Sikh religion that's strict but our society.
Sikhism is really simple. Its totally not about ones personal preferences as long you dont do harm to others and yourself. Sikhism is way of life where you remain or try to be self-conscious so u dont indulge in stuff that ultimately leads to spiritual discontent and/or physical damage.
One can be happily gay and Sikh as well, only problem one would face is by our family/society. So If someone really need to worry about then its about gay and family/society NOT gay and Sikhism.

Dear S Singh, I would recommend that your friend look at the PowerPoint presentation on the website - the link is www.sarbat.net/sexuality_and_equality_in_sikhism.pptThe presentation looks at attitudes towards homosexuality within Sikhism and the common misconceptions and misunderstandings in that respect. I hope that helps your friend. You should also tell your friend that there is support available by joining the message board and talking to other members here. All the best, Moderator
